Pilates, a fitness method developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, has gained widespread popularity for its focus on strength, flexibility, and mind-body connection. It seems everyone wants to do Pilates and I am here for it! As a Certified Pilates Instructor at Activcore in Atlanta, Georgia, I am passionate about all things fitness, especially the practice of Pilates.

You will find plenty of information online about people incorporating “mat” Pilates into their overall exercises routine because it’s the most accessible form of the method. Recently, we’ve also seen an explosion in Pilates reformer-only based studios in Atlanta.

What most people don’t know is that central to the Pilates experience are various pieces of equipment (other than the reformer) designed to support and challenge practitioners of all levels. Each piece serves a unique purpose, offering benefits that enhance core strength, improve posture, and foster overall fitness.

In our private Pilates sessions and semi-private Pilates classes in Atlanta at Activcore Druid Hills, we work around the studio with our clients so you have the opportunity to experience and progress your practice across the Pilates reformer, the Wunda Chair, the Pilates cadillac and the Pilates Tower.

We typically see the matwork and Pilates reformer as our foundational work, which we supplement with the other apparatus to help you develop the full body flexibility and strength that Pilates promises. Joseph Pilates himself called this “uniform development” and designed his equipment to support that goal.

Let's explore the different types of Pilates equipment and their specific advantages.

Pilates Reformer

The Pilates Reformer is perhaps the most iconic piece of equipment in Pilates studios. It consists of a sliding carriage that moves back and forth on rails within a frame. Springs of varying resistance levels attach to the carriage, providing resistance as users push or pull against them. Footbars, straps, and handles further enhance versatility, allowing for hundreds of exercises targeting different muscle groups.

Benefits:

  • Improved Core Strength: The Pilates reformer challenges core stability through controlled movements against spring resistance.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: It facilitates deep stretching of muscles.
  • Posture Correction: The frame of the Pilates reformer helps you and your teacher focus on alignment to improve your posture and body awareness.

Pilates Cadillac (Trapeze Table)

Joseph Pilates named this apparatus “the Cadillac” after the eponymous car because he reportedly thought it was the "Cadillac" of exercise equipment due to its comfort and luxury compared to other exercise machines of its time.

The Pilates Cadillac consists of a raised mat with a metal frame above it. Attached springs, bars, and straps enable exercises in various positions—lying down, sitting, standing, or hanging. It's ideal for both rehabilitation and advanced workouts due to its adaptability and support.

Benefits:

  • Full-Body Workout: Targets multiple muscle groups simultaneously.
  • Increased Range of Motion: Facilitates movements that enhance flexibility and joint mobility.
  • Rehabilitation: Supports gentle exercises for injury recovery and physical therapy.
  • Inversions: Who doesn’t love the chance to be upside down? The upper frame of the Pilates Cadillac allows you to invert in both gentle exercises like the half hang and really challenging ones like candlestick.

Pilates Chair (Wunda Chair)

The Pilates Wunda Chair is a compact, versatile piece of equipment with a seat and pedal system that adjusts spring tension. Joseph Pilates designed it with home use and space efficiency in mind. Its compact size makes it suitable for personal use in smaller living spaces or private studios. This accessibility allows more people to practice Pilates exercises without needing extensive equipment or studio access.

The Wunda Chair focuses on exercises that mimic your everyday movements such as sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling. It often challenges your balance and stability while targeting specific muscle groups, making it suitable whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner.

Benefits:

  • Balance and Coordination: Enhances proprioception and neuromuscular control.
  • Functional Strength: Focuses on functional movements like sitting, standing, and pushing.
  • Compact Design: Space-efficient for home use or smaller studios.

Pilates Wall Unit (Pilates Tower or Pole)

The Pilates Wall Unit, also known as the Pilates Tower or Pole, is a vertical frame that attaches to a wall and features adjustable bars, springs, and straps. Typically it is used with a raised Pilates mat and “moon” boxes that can orbit the mat for extra support, often for your feet. The design resembles a compact version of the Pilates cadillac. It offers a vertical workout experience, allowing you to perform exercises in standing, sitting, or lying positions against the wall. It allows for a wide range of exercises to target strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination, similar to what can be achieved on a Pilates cadillac but in a more space-efficient format.

Benefits:

  • Versatility: Provides a wide range of exercises similar to the Pilates cadillac in a space-efficient format.
  • Support and Stability: Ideal for beginners or those needing additional support.
  • Strength and Flexibility: Enhances overall strength, flexibility, and balance.

Pilates Barrels

In Pilates, there are various sizes and shapes of barrels or arc-shaped apparatuses designed to support your spine in various exercises and stretches. The barrels help elongate and strengthen your torso muscles while improving flexibility and alignment.

The choice of barrel size depends on individual needs, goals, and experience level. Beginners may start with a small barrel to focus on basic spinal mobilization and flexibility. As your proficiency and strength increase, you will progres to larger barrels like the spine corrector or ladder barrel to provide more challenging exercises and greater versatility in Pilates workouts.

SMALL BARREL

  • Size: The smallest of the Pilates barrels, typically around 18-22 inches in length.
  • Shape: It has a gentle curve, similar to a small arch or half-circle.
  • Purpose: The small barrel is used primarily for stretching and strengthening exercises that focus on spinal mobility, particularly in the thoracic spine (upper back). It’s ideal for targeting smaller muscle groups and facilitating gentle backbends.

SPINE CORRECTOR

  • Size: Slightly larger than the small barrel, generally around 28-30 inches in length.
  • Shape: The spine corrector has a more pronounced curve, resembling a larger arch.
  • Purpose: It is designed to support the natural curves of the spine and facilitate a wider range of exercises compared to the small barrel. Exercises on the spine corrector focus on spinal articulation, core strengthening, and improving overall flexibility and posture.

LADDER BARREL

  • Size: The largest of the Pilates barrels, measuring approximately 35-37 inches in length.
  • Shape: The ladder barrel has a significant curve, resembling a half-circle or arc with a flat platform on top and steps (ladder rungs) on one side.
  • Purpose: It offers the most versatility among the barrel types, accommodating a wide range of exercises for spinal extension, flexion, lateral flexion, and rotation. The ladder rungs provide additional options for arm and leg exercises, enhancing the challenge and variety of movements.

Benefits:

  • Spine Alignment: Supports gentle spinal articulation and decompression.
  • Core Strengthening: Targets deep abdominal muscles and promotes better posture.
  • Stretching Aid: Assists in achieving deeper stretches and releasing tension.

Pilates Correctors

In Pilates, the toe corrector, foot corrector, and neck corrector are specialized apparatuses designed to target specific areas of your body for improved alignment, strength, and flexibility.

TOE CORRECTOR

The toe corrector focuses on the toes and feet, aiming to strengthen the muscles of the toes and improve flexibility in the toes and ankles. This helps enhance balance and stability while promoting better foot function overall.

FOOT CORRECTOR

The foot corrector, on the other hand, works to strengthen the arches of the feet and the muscles around the ankles, aiding in correcting imbalances and supporting proper alignment of the lower body. Both correctors contribute to better posture and body mechanics, crucial for overall health and injury prevention.

NECK CORRECTOR

Lastly, the neck corrector is used to strengthen the muscles of the neck and upper back, promoting better posture and relieving tension commonly held in these areas.

By targeting these specific muscle groups with controlled resistance exercises, Pilates correctors play a vital role in enhancing overall body awareness, alignment, and functional movement patterns. Integrating these correctors into a Pilates practice can help you achieve a balanced and strong body while minimizing the risk of injury.

Benefits:

  • Cervical and Lower Extremity Alignment: The toe and foot corrector corrects imbalances in the feet and the lower extremities. The neck corrector improves posture by aligning the cervical spine
  • Strengthening Specific Muscle Areas: Strengthens the muscles of and around the feet including toes, arches, and ankles. The neck corrector strengthens muscles of the neck and upper back.
  • Alleviates Pain and Discomfort: The toe and foot corrector can help alleviate foot pain and discomfort and reduce the risk of foot related injuries. The neck corrector reduces tension and neck strain and promotes relaxation.

Pilates Ped-o-Pull

The Ped-o-Pull is a unique piece of equipment used in Pilates exercises to target upper body strength and flexibility. It consists of a metal frame with adjustable springs and handles, resembling a portable Pilates reformer for the upper body.

The Ped-o-Pull allows for a variety of exercises that focus on improving posture, shoulder stability, and overall upper body strength. By utilizing resistance provided by the springs, practitioners can perform exercises that engage muscles of the arms, shoulders, back, and chest in controlled, fluid movements.

This equipment is particularly effective for enhancing your core stability while simultaneously working the upper body, making it beneficial if you want to improve strength, coordination, and range of motion in your arms and upper extremities.

Benefits:

  • Improves Posture: Encourages proper alignment of the spine and pelvis during exercises, which can contribute to better posture over time. Improved posture can alleviate strain on the spine and reduce the risk of developing back pain.
  • Promotes Shoulder Stability: Emphasis on controlled movements, isometric contractions and scapular stabilization work together to strengthen the muscles supporting the shoulder joint and enhance overall shoulder stability and function.
  • Improves Core Strength: Enhances core engagement while strengthening muscles of the arms, shoulders, back, and chest.
  • Builds Strength and Flexibility: Targets upper body strength and flexibility through controlled resistance exercises.

Conclusion

Incorporating Pilates equipment into your fitness routine can significantly enhance your strength, flexibility, and overall well-being.
