As a physical therapist for over 25 years, I have worked in two very different settings: a high volume orthopedic center where I saw multiple patients per hour versus a boutique physical therapy clinic where I treat just one patient per hour. Both have taught me a lot about myself and the power of my time.
I began my career in the high volume orthopedic center. During those years, I often questioned if I was a good PT. I always thought it was because I didn’t have enough clinical experience. However, after joining Activcore, I soon realized that it was actually because I didn’t have enough time to spend with each patient individually in order to get the most out of them at each session. In other words, how could I expect anyone to invest in their health, if I couldn’t fully invest in it?
Periodically, the front desk manager would give me a huge stack of patient charts to discharge. It was my job to go through them and clear out our filing cabinet to make space for new charts. While weeding through the discharge pile, I would wonder what happened to each patient. Some names I could remember vividly, while others I'd struggle to remember. I guess that’s what happens when you see 30 patients a day!
I would ask myself, "Why didn't they come back, and what could I have done differently?"
The answer became obvious: the power of my time.
Today, I have the freedom to practice without those time constraints. By giving each person my undivided attention, I get to know them on a deeper level which yields faster results and better outcomes.
Here are some essential things that we do at Activcore with the additional time:
More Education
An important component of recovery is empowering people with the tools and knowledge for long term success. I teach each client about basic anatomy, pain science, and corrective exercises. If they have time to learn these it will give them a better understanding about their body, why certain things are happening to it, and what they can do to regain control of it.
More Hands On
The power of touch can be just as valuable as the power of time. Administering a massage, stretch, joint mobilization, or some other manual therapy technique can have a major impact on the success of a treatment session. I remember one day, while working in the high volume setting, I happened to have more time on my schedule with one client because the next client had canceled. I could finally do some hands-on work. But then I decided against it because I knew she would expect me to do the same at every session. I think back to that day and say shame on me. But I say shame on the business model I felt trapped in.
More Corrective
In a high volume setting, it is common for physical therapists to juggle multiple patients and give cookie-cutter exercises that have minimal value (and could probably just be done at home). This would never happen in a value driven model like Activcore. We stay by your side throughout each session, applying corrective exercises that get to the underlying root cause of your health condition.
