As a pelvic floor physical therapist, many of my clients are female. But I have specialized training to help males too! Equipped with the most advanced tools and techniques in the industry, like Visceral Manipulation, Low Pressure Fitness, and the Redcord suspension system, I can help you overcome pain and pelvic floor dysfunction, regardless of your gender.
What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a vast network of ligaments, muscles, and tendons that work as a hammock to support the organs it encases and prevent downward pressure on these organs during everyday living. The pelvic floor also functions with other parts of your body including the upper and lower back, hips, and diaphragm to aid in urine and fecal continence, sexual function, and lymphatic drainage.
What are some signs of pelvic floor dysfunction?
Located at the center of your body, the pelvis serves many very important functions. So it is common for men to experience pelvic floor dysfunction at least once in their lifetime. But it doesn’t mean you have to live with it. A pelvic floor therapist can help.
If one of the functions of the pelvic floor isn’t working properly, then you could experience some of the following problems:
- Pelvic/groin pain
- Urinary incontinence
- Pelvic muscle/hip/core weakness
- Lower back pain
- Sciatica
- Painful ejaculation
- Coccydynia
- Constipation/diarrhea
- Fecal incontinence
- Interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome)
- Hemorrhoids
- Prostatitis
- Penile pain
- Scrotal/testicular pain
- Problems after having surgery (prostatectomy, hernia repair, etc.)
- And many other conditions!
What is pelvic floor physical therapy?
Pelvic floor PT is a specialized branch of physical therapy that specifically addresses pain and dysfunction of the pelvic girdle. It starts with an initial evaluation. This involves a thorough assessment from head to toe, with an emphasis on the pelvis, in search of the underlying root cause of your symptoms. We will check for tone, tightness and strength of your pelvic floor and surrounding structures. Remember, they all work together! From there, we will tailor a treatment program based on your presentation and, most importantly, your specific needs and goals. By targeting the muscles and tissues in the pelvic girdle, you can experience relief from chronic pain, enhanced mobility, and restored muscle control. Ultimately we will empower you with the tools and knowledge to regain a better quality of life for the long term.
