Visceral Manipulation: What is it? And How Can it Help Improve My Pelvic Health?

January 24, 2025

Visceral manipulation is a gentle type of manual therapy treatment focused on the organs and associated connective tissue. As a pelvic health physical therapist, I use it often to treat a wide variety of conditions across all ages and genders. Some common conditions that Visceral Manipulation helps includes:

  • Musculoskeletal problems like lower back pain, sciatica, and neck pain
  • Stress, PTSD, anxiety and depression
  • Bowel problems like diarrhea, constipation, and GERD
  • Bladder problems like urinary incontinence, painful bladder syndrome (interstitial cystitis)
  • Pregnancy and Postpartum related issues involving the diaphragm/breathing, lower back pain, pelvic pressure, and lymphatic drainage
  • Scar tissue formation before and after surgery

How Does Visceral Manipulation Work?

If an organ is subject to any sort of trauma, the resulting inflammation can cause the tissue to tighten up and adhere (i.e. adhesions) thereby causing the organ to get stuck. Due to the connective tissues surrounding the organ, the pain can refer to other parts of the body. This is common after sustaining a sports injury, having a baby, or undergoing extensive surgery. They are all physically traumatic events with long-term effects on our organs.

Visceral manipulation utilizes gentle compression and stretching of the affected tissues to enhance blood flow to the area. When blood flow occurs, people report the feeling of mild tingling, warmth, and general relaxation. Some will hear their colon gurgle and perhaps an emotional release. This is a good thing!

How Can It Help Improve My Pelvic Health?

Advancements in the field of pelvic floor physical therapy have generated a better understanding of the components of the abdominopelvic canister (including the ribs, the lungs, the contents of the stomach, and the pelvic floor) and how they all work together to support the body and contribute to normal function of the pelvis. Visceral Manipulation can help release any underlying restrictions affecting the performance of these components.

Does Visceral Manipulation Hurt?

Absolutely not! Visceral Manipulation is a very gentle, hands-on technique applied by a trained professional.
